The Carretera Austral begins in Puerto Montt, a city you can reach by flying from Santiago to El Tepual Airport.
However, the true gateway to the Carretera Austral is Hornopirén, less than three hours by car from Puerto Montt Airport. Some of its highlights include Río Blanco Waterfall, Hornopirén National Park, and the small fishing village of El Manzano.
